Description
I was committed to my Alzheimers piece to document what I felt was the gradual parting and growing sense of being lost by both the sufferer and the carer which is often the life partner or close relative. Having witnessed this in my family I perceive Alzheimer's as a silent death in the living. To the carer, this gradual departing can be painful, as the person they once shared a loving relationship becomes void of any knowledge of their existence and they become a breathing shell of a reminder of what once was. As the condition permeates; through the eyes of the sufferer, Alzheimer's sees the loved one/carer as a distant memory. Gradually this memory of a once loved face declines to one of a stranger; someone to fear and repel til finally, it fades to a face that bears no recognition or response at all. Void, vacant, a vessel left and lost to wander with only distorted, fragmented memories to which to cling.
